Internship at Lumon Has Enabled a Deeper Understanding of the Finnish Work Culture
Rushitha Fonseka started his internship at Lumon in the early summer of 2023 as part of his studies in Digital International Business. He was introduced to Lumon through his University, and eventually got an internship opportunity at Lumon’s Kouvola office. Rushitha tells us what it has been like to be a part of Finnish working culture, and what has learned at Lumon so far through his internship.
“I Found out About Lumon Through my University”
I am a 3rd-year Digital International Business student at the University of Applied Sciences of South-Eastern Finland. During my internship, I have mostly been involved in the development of an accounting practices manual for Lumon. My business studies and work experience of 10 years at Ernst & Young Sri Lanka have helped me in my work.
I found out about Lumon through my University. The representative from Lumon presented the company to us. I was excited to learn about the product and Lumon’s values, which take a genuine interest in Lumon’s employees.
During this internship, I learned about the details of accounting and business processes. I have also been able to create value for the company through lean thinking. As a part of this job, I get to audit the company's accounting records, which interests me the most. The freedom given to me in certain tasks has also helped me be innovative and think outside the box. I get to present my findings weekly, and the feedback I receive is positive. Lunch and coffee breaks with my colleagues are some of my favourite moments.
My supervisor's feedback helps me understand Lumon’s expectations of me. During these one-on-one meetings, we set weekly goals, which helps me to organize my tasks. I have learned various things about accounting processes and the functionality of Lumon’s main ERP system.
Everyday Work at Lumon Helps Me to Understand the Finnish Working Culture Better
There has been great dedication and involvement from my supervisor in guiding and encouraging me. This dedication and involvement from my supervisor have been invaluable in my work. I also feel accepted by my colleagues as a part of the team, something which I could not necessarily expect before. I work with a great team that respects each other and encourages each other.
Everyday work at Lumon helps me to understand the Finnish working culture, especially through the high standards of trust and respect shown by my peers and supervisor. This helps me to better integrate into the working community. I have a positive impression and would recommend Lumon to my friends and international talents.
